How to Make a Taiko Drum

Human beings developed music thousands of years ago, and suffice it to say that it has become a crucial aspect of the things that we tend to take part in on a day to day basis once all has been said and is now out of the way. While stringed instruments have become a mainstay of modern musical practices, it should also be noted that these were perhaps more modern instruments that were made because of the fact that they involve complex structures that early humans would have struggled to come up with.

A much more primal and ancient form of music can be seen in things like Japan’s traditional drumming which uses something called a Taiko drum. The reason behind this is that drumming and percussion in general was the sort of thing that humans could much more easily do at the advent of society than might have been the case otherwise. It basically just involves hitting one object with another, and the great thing about Taiko drums is that they are relatively easy for you to make in the comfort of your own home.

If you want to go about making a Taiko drum, all you really need is a hollowed out body such as a tire as well as something to cover both ends of it which would create the resonance that has become an iconic aspect of Taiko drumming in particular. Cowhide has been traditionally used, but you can also use synthetic hides and films that will create a wonderful sound. It is essential to at the very least try to be a little DIY when you attempt to create drums that will conform to this tradition.
